Lodge Flap 2009

The Insignia Committee is looking for designs for the lodge flap for 2009. Even if you are not artistic, make a design and submit it. The Insignia Committee will fix it up and make it look good. By doing this now, we give ourselves a whole year to perfect a perfect lodge flap.

Ku-Ni-Eh Lodge hosts a series of standard events each year.  Below is a general time frame and brief description of each of these events.

  • Annual Lodge Winter Banquet -- This gathering of arrowmen and their families is a chance to honor outstanding members of our lodge.  Here the Chief's Awards, Founders' Awards, Vigil Honor, and other awards are announced.

  • Lodge Lock-In -- This is a newer tradition for our lodge.  Each year we get together for an evening in February and have a big party.  These usually occur at a local YMCA where the facilities are open, giving us an opportunity to swim, play sports, or just hang out.

  • Ordeals -- The ordeals are held during the late spring and throughout the summer.  These are the induction weekends.

  • Fall Fellowship -- The Fall Fellowship is a gathering of the lodge for fun and relaxation after the ordeal season.  Also, the lodge leadership is elected at the Sunday morning business meeting.

  • Lodge Leadership and Development Conference -- This is a conference held to instruct new Executive Committee members on their responsibilities and also serves as a planning event.

  • Cub Winter Days -- Held during December on the muddiest possible weekend, Ku-Ni-Eh provides staff, support, and planning for this council event.

In addition, Ku-Ni-Eh also attends events each year for Sectional and National OA.  These include the annual Section Conclave and the biennial NOAC.

Ku-Ni-Eh Lodge Guide To Parliamentary Procedure

    • A MOTION: FROM START TO FINISH:
    • TO MAKE A MOTION: Raise your hand and when recognized by the Lodge Chief state “I move that…”
Make your motion as short and accurate as possible.
Speak up so that everyone can hear you.
Any voting member of the Executive Committee may make a motion.
The Lodge Chief may Require that Motions be made in writing.
    • MOTIONS MUST BE SECONDED: Raise your hand and say “Second”
      A motion must be seconded.
If no second is received, the motion fails.
Any voting member of the committee may second a motion.
    • DEBATE: After a motion is made and seconded, the Lodge Chief will open the floor for debate. This is the time to explain and persuade people to vote for the motion. If you are opposed, this is your time to tell the committee why the motion should not pass. To speak you must raise your hand and wait to be recognized by the Lodge Chief. During Debate you should address the Chair (Lodge Chief) not the other committee members.
    • CALL THE QUESTION: (or how to end discussion of a motion) this is not a mandatory step. The Lodge Chief can Call the Question at any time .If the committee members get long winded and are repeating what everyone is saying and the committee needs to make a decision, then you: Raise your hand; get recognized by the Lodge Chief and say, “I call the Question”. The Lodge Chief will then state the following: “The question has been called, all in favor of ending discussion on this motion, say aye. Those opposed, say nay”.
There must be a majority of 2/3 to pass the motion to end the discussion, and then the motion must be voted upon.
If there are not sufficient votes to pass the motion to end the discussion, more discussion continues.
    • VOTING ON A MOTION: Prior to voting on a motion, the Lodge Chief will repeat the exact wording of the motion.
    • VOICE VOTE: The Lodge Chief will ask: “Everyone who is in favor, please say aye.” He will then ask “Anyone who is opposed please indicate by saying “nay”. The Lodge Chief will then declare whether the motion passed or failed.
    • ROLL CALL VOTE: The Lodge Chief may call for a roll call vote when he thinks an item is of such importance that members’ votes need to be on the record or when it appears that a voice vote will be very close. Committee members may ask for a roll call vote when they do not agree with the Lodge Chief’s interpretation of the voice vote. The committee member, after being recognized by the Lodge chief, states: “I call that a role call vote be taken”. The person making an original motion can include in the motion the statement that the motion be decided by roll call vote.
    • AMENDING A MOTION: If you decide you want to amend a motion, you can do it in three different ways. The lodge chief can require that amendments be made in writing.
    • FRIENDLY AMENDMENT: You can ask the Arrowman who made the original motion whether he would agree to a friendly amendment. This is usually used when a point needs to be clarified.
    • EARLY AMENDMENT: If you want to amend a motion during the discussion stage (before the motion has been voted upon), you follow the following procedure: Be recognized by the Lodge chief and then state, “I ask the motion be amended to state…” The amendment must be seconded. The amendment must be discussed. The amendment must be voted upon and must pass by a majority vote. If the amendment passes, then discussion resumes on the amended motion, followed by a vote on the amended motion.
    • LATE AMENDMENT: If a motion has already been voted on, you can attempt to amend the motion by the following: Be recognized by the Lodge Chief and then state, “I ask the last motion be amended to state….” The amendment must be seconded. The amendment must be discussed. The amendment must be voted upon and must pass by 2/3-majority vote. If the amendment passes, no other vote is required.
    • TABLING A MOTION: The Lodge Chief Can Table A Motion at anytime at his Discretion. If you believe that a motion should be deferred to later in the meeting. You should:
Be recognized by the Lodge Chief and then state: “I move that we table this motion until a later time due to ….”
The motion to table must be seconded.
The motion must be voted upon and must pas by a majority vote.
    • COMMITTING A MOTION: The Lodge Executive Committee May decide to commit the decision of a motion on the floor to a lodge standing committee or to the lodge Key 3 (Lodge Chief, Lodge advisor, and lodge Staff Advisor). To do this state “I move that we commit the decision to the ...” the motion must be seconded and pass by 2/3 vote.
    • REFERING A MOTION: the Lodge Executive Committee may require more information on a subject if this is the case a motion can be referred to any lodge committee. The selected committee must then gather information on the topic and report back to the Executive Committee at an appointed time. To Refer a Motion state “I move that we refer a motion to the … to report back on….” the motion must be seconded and pass by a majority vote.
    • POSTPONING A MOTION: The Lodge Chief can postpone a motion at any time at his discretion. If you want to postpone the discussion on a motion until a future meeting or until some future time, you should:
Be recognized by the Lodge Chief and then state: “I move that we table this motion until…”
Your motion should state whether you are postponing until a specific future meeting or whether you are postponing the motion indefinitely.
The motion to postpone must be seconded.
The motion to postpone must be discussed.
The motion must be voted upon and must pass by a majority vote.

Ku-Ni-Eh Dance Team

Greetings to all Lodge members from the Dance Team!

The Dance Team is still rocking. No matter where we go or what we do, you can guarantee that we are going to be having a great time. We love to Dance and Sing!

Welcome to all our new interested Arrowmen from this year's Ordeal season. If you have not been contacted by a Dance Team member by now, we have a problem with your information, please contact us. We want you to join the fun!

The Dance Team is always looking for new ways to serve others. We will start this year's show season soon and need your help. We will perform for many packs, troops, other organizations in the council. These shows include singing and dancing styles similar to what you would see at a powwow. Its a lot of teaching others and representing the OA in our community.

If you know anyone who is thinking about scheduling a show, please encourage them to call well in advance. We are sorry that we cannot accommodate everyone's request.

Listen closely, my brothers, you can hear the drum!

Elangomat

Elangomat is the Lenni Lenape word meaning friend. As an Elangomat, You will be responsible for a "tribe" of 8-10 candidates who you will be working with during their Ordeal. You will spend most of the day with your clan, eating the same food, doing the same work, and setting an example of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service, which the candidates will look up to. A brief training course before each of the Ordeals will tell you all you need to know as an Elangomat. Because of the influence you will have in motivating the quality of your new brothers, your service as an Elangomat is one of the most important and rewarding things you can do in the lodge. I have been asked many questions by almost every person I have talked to that was interested in being an Elangomat. I have taken the liberty of answering some of those questions.

Q: WHY IS THE ELANGOMAT JOB SO IMPORTANT?

A: The Elangomat is critical in the Order of the Arrow because it is essential to the membership of new members that their Induction is meaningful and helpful. If a candidate gets the wrong impression of the Order or does not understand what is happening during the process, he will soon abandon our Lodge. Elangomat is Lenni Lenape for friend and a friend is just what the candidates need. They need guidance to see the path to Brotherhood and why it is important.

Q: WHAT SHOULD I TAKE WITH ME ON THE ORDEAL (S)?

A: You need to bring a daypack, lots of water (or a water bottle), a sleeping

bag, and a tent. Just remember what you brought to your Ordeal.

Q: THE ORDEAL IS OVER NOW WHAT?

A: An Elangomat's job is not over right after the candidates finish their Ordeal. You will receive a list of candidates, which will include their name, and phone number. You are given their phone number for a reason. It is the Elangomat's job to call every candidate from their tribe at least once a month to tell them about upcoming events, and to get them to get their Brotherhood.

Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CONTACT CANDIDATES?

A: As I said in the above question, the Elangomat should contact their candidates at least once a month with information about Chapter and Lodge events.

Q: WHAT DRIVES ME TO KEEP COMMUNICATION WITH THOSE CANDIDATES FOR SO LONG?

A: The incentives of Brotherhood and a patch are no real reason to give aid to your fellow brothers. Merely job perks, the two in no way compare to the kind of impact you will have on new members. As an Elangomat, you have a responsibility to your tribe to give them the best chance they can have at becoming successful in the Order of the Arrow, which may affect the rest of their lives. As a representative of your chapter and lodge, candidates base their views of the Order on their experience with you and if it is a poor one they may leave forever. It is your duty to show them how great our Brotherhood can be so they can choose to go on or not and not be shunned away.

Q: WHOM DO I TALK TO IF I HAVE QUESTIONS OR WANT TO SIGN UP TO BE AN ELANGOMAT?

A: If you are interested in becoming an Elangomat, or just have questions, you may email the lodge at ku-ni-eh@bsatroop956.org

History of the Ku-Ni-Eh Lodge

In 1922, Arthur E. Roberts, Scout Executive and Camp Director, founded the Tribe of Ku-Ni-Eh, a Brotherhood of Honor Campers who exemplified the Scout Oath and Law. After discovering that the Order of the Arrow wanted a fee to join, Mr. Roberts created the tribe at Camp Friedlander. The Tribe of Ku-Ni-Eh was used by the Cincinnati Area Council until the early 1950's. In fact, the Ku-Ni-Eh system was as popular as the Order of the Arrow, with over 250 councils using the same system and materials at the height of its popularity.

The We-Hin-Ay-Pay is a symbol brought into use by Arthur E. Roberts, and each color symbolizes a different quality: red for blood, the heart and life; white for purity; green for nature and blossoming manhood; and the rising sun on the blue sky since the sun, to the Native American, represents honor and fidelity. The We-Hin-Ay-Pay was taken from the base of a ritual basket of the Maidu Indians of Northern California, as was our Lodge's name, which means "order of manhood."

In 1951 the Tribe of Ku-Ni-Eh chose to join forces with the Order of the Arrow by becoming Ku-Ni-Eh Lodge 462. (The Boy Scouts of America had made the OA official in 1948.) With the help of Zit-Kala-Sha Lodge 123 of Louisville, KY, Ku-Ni-Eh held its first ordeal, officially establishing its status as an OA lodge. With the help of Camp Friedlander Staff member Conrad Fruehan (of Michi-Kini-Kwa 306) and many others, the new lodge was well on its way. On August 15th of the following year, nearly one hundred members participated in a Brotherhood Ceremony, conducted by Michi-Kini-Kwa 306, sealing their membership. In 1953, the Lodge issued its first OA lodge flap, replacing the khaki square with the We-Hin-Ay-Pay on it. By 1955, the Lodge created its first chapters and in 1956 it inducted its first Vigil Honor members, again with the help of Zit-Kala-Sha.

In 1957, Ku-Ni-Eh Lodge 462 merged with Michi-Kini-Qua Lodge 155 as the Cincinnati Area Council and the Dan Beard Councils merged, bringing the total lodge membership up to around 700 and increasing lodge boundaries to include Northern Kentucky.

Then, in 1959, a merger occurred between Ku-Ni-Eh Lodge 462 and Fort Hamilton Council's Michi-Kini-Kwa Lodge 306. This lodge in Hamilton was the one that had helped Ku-Ni-Eh in its early years and established the Anthony Wayne Trail, which Ku-Ni-Eh partially maintained. Ku-Ni-Eh lodge was very prosperous during the 1960's and 1970's, and by 1979 had a membership of 1,000 members.

January of 1960 saw the First Annual Father/Son Banquet, which lives on as the Annual Lodge Winter Banquet today. Two years later in the fall of 1962, the Lodge began the long-standing tradition of the Fall Fellowship, with one hundred Arrowmen in attendance. The first time the Clan system was used was in 1963, when chapters were subdivided into these "clans" according to district boundaries. However, the following year a system was established to form a chapter for each district. 1965 saw the approval of "Ku-Ni-Eh, My Ku-Ni-Eh" as the official song of the Lodge and the organization of the Lodge Dance Team. During the sixties the lodge held dominance in the section, being well represented with section officers and claiming the section trophy permanently after winning it three straight years. Amazingly 1969 brought the lodge 538 new members, with the largest ordeal inducting 157. The Fall Business Meeting that year was held at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

The Song of Ku-Ni-Eh

(Tune: Maryland, My Maryland)

Where e'er on earth we chance to be,
Ku-Ni-Eh, my Ku-Ni-Eh,
Our hearts will ever turn to thee,
Ku-Ni-Eh, my Ku-Ni-Eh,
Thy spirit makes us ever strong,
Thy comradeship we praise in song,
Miami's waters carry it on,
Ku-Ni-Eh, my Ku-Ni-Eh.

Thy faith and trust we safely keep,
Ku-Ni-Eh, my Ku-Ni-Eh,
In waking hours and midnight sleep,
Ku-Ni-Eh, my Ku-Ni-Eh,
Our fondest thoughts are for our tribe,
And tho' we're scattered far and wide,
In spirit we'll be side by side,
Ku-Ni-Eh, my Ku-Ni-Eh
